For Tasmania

The sourcing of new and potentially lucrative markets for Tasmania's export abalone as well as the industry's ability to sustain harvesting levels will ensure a bright economic future for the fishery and in turn generate prosperity well beyond the bounds of immediate industry participants, providing many other areas of Tasmanian commerce with vital investment capital.

Generating prosperity (The value)
The current level of export revenue generated by the abalone industry injects some $335 million of associated economic activity into the state's economy - a significant figure which ensures all Tasmanians can share in the success of the fishery. This figure is set to rise over the next few years as abalone trade, one of Tasmania's premium export industries, has the realisable potential to generate well over $100 million per annum in revenue by the year 2007.

A share in the success
The Tasmanian abalone industry recognises the benefits of a prosperous state economy and as such ensures that their good fortune reaches well beyond the bounds of the immediate industry participants providing many areas of Tasmanian commerce with vital and solid investment.
Agriculture, viticulture and wine making, retail, wholesale, property development, tourism, aquaculture as well as a diverse range of other businesses and enterprises all share in the profits generated by the abalone industry which provides an ever increasing number of Tasmanian's with income via the harvesting (divers and deck hands), processing (factory workers, truck drivers and administrators), marketing and exporting (managers and consultants) and service industries (mechanics, technicians, welders and boilermakers). Additional employment is gained via an increasing diversification of investment outside of the fishing industry in a multitude of areas.
Fundamental and substantial restructuring of the abalone industry in recent years has seen more and more Tasmanians investing and participating in the industry. From January 1991 non-diving investors were able to directly purchase abalone quota units and as these units continue to change hands the number of Tasmanian's sharing in the success will only increase
In every sense of the word, Tasmania's abalone fishery is a model industry. Thanks to the foresight and responsible attitudes of industry participants, Tasmanians will all benefit from a sustainable fishery which generates massive export income and employs an ever increasing number of Tasmanians. Additionally profits are re-invested back into the Tasmanian economy in many diverse ways creating further employment and generating new wealth throughout the state.
